United Way NCA is uniquely positioned in the community to convene resources and partners to help join us in the fight to solve the most pressing issues in our community. And today, that issue is the current government shutdown crisis affecting hundreds and thousands of members of our community.
The urgency is real! This Friday, January 11, will mark the first pay period where federal workers will not receive a paycheck that they desperately rely on to live. While many of these federal workers will be made whole once the shutdown is over, there are thousands of our neighbors who will never recoup these funds. These individuals are in jobs at smaller contracting firms that directly support the government in providing services such as: janitorial, printing, trucking, food and IT.
As a result of this crisis, United Way NCA is making available $50K through its Emergency Assistance Fund to meet the basic needs of those affected. The funds will be directed to organizations in our region that will help residents weather this storm and provide vital food, rent and other assistance programs.
United Way NCA is calling on the community – both corporate partners and individuals in the region to join us by matching its pledge or contributing. Pepco was first to respond with $50,000 followed by Bank of America with a $10,000 grant to the Emergency Assistance Fund.
In addition, United Way NCA is encouraging individuals and families affected by the government shutdown to seek financial guidance and one-to-one counseling by visiting one of our four Financial Empowerment Centers (FEC) located throughout the region.
Our most vulnerable neighbors are counting on us! Will you join us in this fight by making a donation today to the Emergency Assistance Fund? Your contribution will go a long way to helping those during this time of need. Thank you for giving and for joining with us to LIVE UNITED!
